Learning from OBAS Group

Why it’s important to get through the first few years of a new business

In conversation with Ben Harford

My name is Benjamin James Harford, Director of Business Development at OBAS Group. Prior to starting OBAS Group with my business partner, I was self-employed as an Educational Consultant.

The OBAS Group helps overseas schools, agents, students, and families access the very best of UK education. We specialise in education for students aged 6 to 20 years. Previously, as an Educational Consultant, I grew so much that I couldn't take on any more clients. It was time to scale up. To do so, I needed a solid platform that was customer-focused and could scale, and so the OBAS Group platform was born.

The journey

It has been an extremely busy journey. I love the fact we are attracting and meeting new partners daily - from governments to education groups, every day is different. We are very lucky, as we deal with many nationalities and cultures, and it never gets boring.

We have made it past the most difficult period of any business - the first 3 years. We now are stable and looking to take it to the next level.

The growth curve

The first two years were very tough, as we were working for free. Luckily, we had a solid plan and a long-term mindset. We are now in an excellent position and we are working hard to keep up with demand and recruit excellent staff. We have achieved this through work ethic, trust, and a willingness to listen to our clients and be adaptable.

Challenges

The main challenge has been opening representative offices in other countries and having trustworthy staff overseas.

Highlights

I get to meet a lot of very interesting people, and I also work with people who I want to work with. Yesterday, I met with the Vietnamese Government, today I am back in my home office, and tomorrow, I’m in London for events. No two days are the same, and it keeps you on your toes and motivated.

The future

We shall be the market leaders within our area, it's only a matter of time. We are obsessed with customer service, and making sure everyone involved has a win-win scenario.

Advice

Unless you're willing to put in ridiculous hours to get it off the ground, don't bother. Network like mad. Employ people who are better than you and be obsessive about customer service.
