When forming a limited company in the UK, all directors and persons with significant control (PSCs) are required to verify their ID, due to the recent Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 (ECCTA).
Below, we’ll explain the types of ID we may request when registering a company through us.
Key takeaways
- You must verify your identity with Companies House to form a limited company in the UK.
- You will need a suitable photo ID and may need proof of address when forming a company through 1st Formations.
- You will receive a personal verification code from Companies House when your identity has been verified.
Types of ID and who needs to supply them
When you submit your company registration application to 1st Formations, all customers, directors and persons with significant control (PSCs) will be asked by us to verify your ID. We require your ID to be verified to satisfy our anti-money laundering responsibilities and to comply with ECCTA.
UK residents
We will ask all customers, directors and PSCs to verify their ID using our Onfido app. We accept the following proof of ID documents for UK residents:
- Biometric passport
- Driving licence (provisional or full)
- Biometric residence permit (valid or expired within the last 18 months)
- Residence card
- Frontier Worker Permit
During our verification checks, we will also attempt to verify your residential address electronically. If we are unable to verify your address, we will ask you to send proof of address, such as a bank statement or utility bill, dated within the last 3 months.
Non-UK residents
When forming a company through 1st Formations, all non-UK residents are required to provide proof of identity and most are required to provide proof of address.
For proof of ID, we accept the following:
- Biometric or machine-readable passport: From any country
- Driving Licence or Biometric ID Card: From the EU or EEA
For proof of address, we can electronically check some addresses without the need for you to provide proof of address; however, in instances where we are unable to do so, we will ask you to provide proof of address documentation dated within the last 3 months.
We may also ask you to provide additional documents, such as certificates of residence, depending on your country of residence.
How we run proof of ID checks
When we ask for your proof of ID, we’ll let you know who we need it from. We use a secure online system called Onfido to run our proof of ID checks. Don’t worry if we ask you to complete a Onfido check; it only takes five minutes to complete via a simple app and won’t cost you anything.

You’ll receive an email invitation from our ID team with detailed instructions on completing your ID verification through the Onfido app. Once you’ve done this, we will begin drafting your work and let you know if there are any issues with your submissions.
Common reasons why ID checks fail
In some instances, the initial digital ID check could fail. The main reasons for this are:
- Incorrect personal details entered – people often provide a business address instead of their home address
- Recently moved home – if you have a new residential address, the digital footprint may not have fully updated to the new address yet
- You are not on the electoral register
Please double-check the information you enter into the company registration form to ensure you pass the digital ID verification, which will allow us to process your application without delay.
There are a few reasons why a Onfido ID verification could fail, too, including:
- The image of the ID is unclear (e.g. it’s blurry or contains shadows, light reflections, etc.)
- Failure to upload both the front and back of the proof of ID
- We may not support the jurisdiction of the ID issue (these include Iran, Iraq, North Korea, and Syria)
To avoid processing delays, please submit a clear image of both the front and back of your ID from an approved jurisdiction. Here is an example of what you should and shouldn’t submit:

If you fail either of these ID check stages, don’t worry; it will not affect your credit rating. We will keep you updated throughout the application process and notify you if we require additional information before submitting your company registration request to Companies House.
How proof of ID checks work at Companies House
All directors and PSCs are required to verify their identity with Companies House at the point of incorporating the company. When forming your company with 1st Formations, will ask verify your ID and send this to Companies House. They will then send you a personal verification code, which is unique to each person, and needs to be entered prior to a company being incorporated.
You will need to provide this personal verification code to us to enable us to submit your company order to Companies House. Once your company has been incorporated, it will state on the Companies House public register that your identity has been verified.

Hello,
I formed my company through your platform and verified my identity at the time using the CREDAS app.
I recently received an email from Companies House about the new director identity verification rules that take effect before November 2026, and I wanted to confirm whether the verification I completed with CREDAS during formation already satisfies the new Companies House identity verification requirement (under the Authorised Corporate Service Provider framework), or if I’ll need to complete it again through your verification service.
Could you please confirm my current status and advise whether any further action is required on my part?
Thank you for your help,
Karim Osama
Dear Karim,
Thank you for your kind comment.
We require our customers to complete ID verification checks via Credas as part of our AML/KYC procedures. Please note that this information is stored internally and is not (and will not) be shared with Companies House for their new identity verification process.
As an ACSP, we will begin verifying the identity of directors and people with significant control (PSCs) for new incorporations only ahead of the 18 November deadline. At this time, we do not plan to carry out identity verification for existing companies. However, we will continue to provide guidance to help you comply with the new requirements.
For further details on how to complete this process, please reach out to our Customer Service Team and we can then assist you further.
Kind regards,
The 1st Formations Team.
I am a director of a UK limited company formed through 1st Formations. I am not a UK resident and do not live in the UK. Additionally, my passport is not biometric, and I am currently unable to travel to the UK.
Could you please advise how I can verify my identity under these circumstances?
Dear Ahmed,
Thank you for your kind comment!
We will need to run our ID checks, so we will need a certified ID such as a passport or a national ID card. We will also need proof of address document dated within the last 3 months. Acceptable forms of proof of address vary depending on the location of the client. Our compliance team will assist you in supplying an acceptable document for this purpose. You can find more information about how to provide proof of ID and address here – https://youtu.be/3vyxjYKR50g.
Should you require any additional queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Kind regards,
The 1st Formations Team.
Hi I currently run a very small ltd company but refuse to use digital id. Will I be forced to close down my company and become self employed or sole trader and what happens to bbl. Thank you
Thank you for your comment, Nick.
1st Formations offers an alternative method for customers who are unable to complete identity checks digitally. In such cases, documents can be manually certified by one of the following authorised persons or institutions: the Post Office, a Civil Servant, Minister of Religion, Doctor, Chartered Accountant, Solicitor or Notary, or a Teacher or Lecturer.
In addition, Companies House states on their website:
“If you cannot verify online and you live in the UK, you may be able to verify your identity in person at a Post Office. You’ll need to use the ‘Verify your identity for Companies House’ service first to find out if you can verify this way. This route uses GOV.UK One Login to verify your identity and is free of charge.”
